About Hancock County.....

Smallest county in the state with an area of 88.55 square miles.

Created from Brooke County in 1848 and named for John Hancock, first signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Cannon balls manufactured at the iron foundry of Peter Tarr, on King's Creek, were used by Commodore Perry at the battle of Lake Erie.

Leading industries are iron and steel, chinaware and pottery, oil refining, industrial gas production, and tourism.

Iron and Steel

Old Tarr Furnace was the first blast furnace west of the Allegheny Mountains.
About two miles away, the modern blast furnaces of Weirton Steel are among the largest in the United States.
Hancock County is the leading steel producing county in West Virginia.

The teapot, located at the intersection of US Route 30 and WV Route 2, signifies the importance of the pottery industry in Hancock County.

Ergon of West Virginia operates a modern oil refinery near Newell, which provides oil for Quaker State's adjacent blending and packaging facility.

This 1398 acre park is located just off Route 8 in the northern extreme of the West Virginia panhandle.
Tomlinson Run State Park offers excellent swimming. tennis, miniature golf, boating, fishing, hiking and picnicking facilities as well as overnight group camping.

 

Ohio River Recreation
John F. Kennedy Park and Marina
Kennedy Marina is the perfect place in the Northern Panhandle for boating fishing, camping and picnicking. Public parking is available. The marina is located south of Newell.

Public Stream Access
Public boat launching facilities are available in both Chester and New Cumberland.

New Cumberland Locks and Dam

Massive tow boats, as well as pleasure craft, ply the Ohio River and "lock through" at this Army Corps of Engineer facility. It is located north of New Cumberland on Route 2.

Hunting - Deer, turkey, waterfowl, and small game abound in the county.
Hillcrest Public Hunting Area

This hunting area encompasses 1,519 acres and is maintained by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WV-DNR), Wildlife Resources. It offers farm game habitat and is open to the public during hunting season. Parking is available.
