Created from Brooke County in 1848 and named for John Hancock, first signer of the Declaration of Independence.
Cannon balls
manufactured at the iron foundry of Peter Tarr, on King's Creek,
were used by Commodore Perry at the battle of Lake Erie.

John F. Kennedy Park
and Marina
Kennedy Marina is the

camping and picnicking. Public parking is available. The marina
is located south of Newell.
Public Stream Access
Public boat launching facilities are available in both Chester
and New Cumberland.

Massive tow boats, as well as pleasure craft, ply the Ohio River and "lock through" at this Army Corps of Engineer facility. It is located north of New Cumberland on Route 2. |
Hunting - Deer, turkey,
waterfowl, and small game abound in the county.
Hillcrest Public Hunting Area
This hunting area encompasses 1,519 acres and is
maintained by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources
(WV-DNR), Wildlife Resources. It offers farm game habitat and is
open to the public during hunting season. Parking is available.
