Created from Brooke County in 1848 and named for John Hancock, first signer of the Declaration of Independence.

waterfowl, and small game abound in the county.
Hillcrest Public Hunting Area
This hunting area encompasses 1,519 acres and is
maintained by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources
(WV-DNR), Wildlife Resources. It offers farm game habitat and is
open to the public during hunting season. Parking is available.
